Thank you for enrolling in The Aimers course on Economic Growth and Development, and a very warm welcome to you all.
My name is Devraj Patel. I am a faculty member of Economics and Development Studies at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at The Aimers Prayagraj & Bengaluru, India. Economic growth and development are terms frequently used and sometimes misused in today's world of increasing interdisciplinarity and fluidity in research. The development project, as we understand it today, has evolved through various ideas and debates across different paradigms. Nonetheless, there are established ways in which economists have theorized about growth and development.
This course is designed at an introductory level for undergraduates and postgraduates from any discipline. Anyone interested in engaging with contemporary debates on growth and development is encouraged to enroll. The course consists of 30 lectures spread over 11 weeks. The first 10 lectures will focus on concepts, theories, and debates related to growth, while the next 10 lectures will address concepts, indices, and theories of economic development.
By taking this course, students will familiarize themselves with:
- The structural differences between developed and underdeveloped countries
- Indices of economic development
- Contemporary controversies on growth versus development
- Inclusive growth
- Major models of economic growth, including the Harrod-Domar model, the Solow Growth model, Schumpeter's analysis of economic growth, the big push theory, and the critical minimum effort thesis.
The lectures on economic development will introduce the concept of human development, exploring the theoretical differences between utilitarianism, the basic needs approach, and the capabilities approach. We will also study the evolution of human development indices, such as the Human Development Index (HDI), the Gender Development Index (GDI), the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI), the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM), and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).
To break the monotony of economic concepts and theories, I have also planned four popular lectures:
- The Global North and the Global South: Why the Divide? - This lecture will focus on understanding the reasons behind the socio-economic and political divide between the so-called first, second, and third worlds. We will explore the historical reasons for this political divide and discuss contemporary economic debates related to it.
- Growth-led and Public Support-led Strategies of Development: What Do Country Experiences Reveal? - Different strategies of growth and development have been adopted by various countries worldwide. We will examine why private investment-induced economic growth or public support-led economic development are preferred strategies in different contexts, drawing lessons from the experiences of various countries.
- From MDGs to SDGs: Evolution of the UN Development Goals - This lecture will focus on the transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We will discuss the significance of this shift and explore the underlying politics that influence the setting of UN development goals.
- Mainstreaming Gender in Economic Development - Women's movements globally have fought to ensure that social and economic policies are framed with a gender perspective. This lecture will explore how gender mainstreaming emerged and assess its implementation within policy frameworks. I hope you will enjoy the course. Thank you.
